Tremors rock Kolkata as 5.6-magnitude earthquake strikes Bhutan
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that banks in Kolkata and across West Bengal will remain closed for two consecutive days next week. The closure begins on Saturday, May 9, in observance of Rabindra Jayanti, a significant cultural holiday in the state. Since the following day, May 10, is a Sunday, banking services will remain suspended for the entire weekend, affecting both government and private sector institutions.
In addition to the upcoming weekend break, the holiday calendar for May includes several other notable dates. Banks will be closed on May 26 to commemorate the birthday of the rebel poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam. Furthermore, banks in Gangtok will observe a holiday on May 16 to mark the foundation day of Sikkim. In total, the RBI list confirms 13 holidays for the month of May, including scheduled breaks on the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays.
Despite the high-profile announcement of the state assembly election results tomorrow, Monday, May 4, banks will remain open for regular business. There has been significant public curiosity regarding a potential closure on counting day; however, the RBI holiday list confirms that Monday is a standard working day for all financial institutions. Customers are advised to plan their transactions ahead of the scheduled closures later in the month to avoid inconvenience.
